Stastny helps Rivermen to first playoff win

  Yan Stastny had two goals and an assist as Peoria used quick strikes to earn a 6-4 victory over Houston in Game 1 of their West Division semifinal series at Carver Arena on Wednesday night.

Game 2 is set for Friday.

It was the first-ever Calder Cup Playoff victory for the Rivermen, whose only previous appearance ended in a four-game sweep at the hands of the Aeros in 2006.

2009 Calder Cup Playoffs set to begin Wednesday

The AHL’s 73rd regular season is in the books, and the matchups are set for the first round of the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs.

The final pieces of the 16-team puzzle fell into place on Sunday, as Houston wrapped up third place in the West Division with a 6-4 win over San Antonio at Toyota Center. The Aeros will take on second-place Peoria in the first round, while West champions Milwaukee will face Rockford.

Moose win Harry Hap Holmes Memorial Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League has announced that the Manitoba Moose have won the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award for the 2008-09 season.

Since 1972, the award has been presented to the team which allows the fewest goals in the regular season.
